Maharashtra’s vivid fairs and festivals capture the essence of its culture, customs, and beliefs. Some of the prominent festivals celebrated here include: Ganesh Chaturthi is held in August to commemorate the birth of Lord Ganesh. Beautifully adorned Ganesh idols are placed in homes, and on the last day, the God is led out in a procession accompanied by dance and music, before being immersed in neighbouring rivers and water bodies.

Nag Panchami is another well-known holiday in which snakes are revered. People offer milk or sweets to the deities, who are represented by clay snakes. Sangli in Maharashtra is famed for snake catchers, and people gather to watch their spectacular performances.

Gudi Padwa celebrates the Hindu New Year. Gods are worshipped, and prasad (neem leaves, gramme pulse, and jaggery) is distributed. Narali Pournima is commemorated on the full moon day of the Shravan month, according to the Hindu calendar. Pola is a harvest festival that honours and respects bullocks. Maharashtra is well-known for its many artistic traditions. Some of them are– Kohlapuri Footwear- The Kohlapuri style developed in the Kolhapur district and is popular throughout the state. They are handmade leather shoes. Sawantwadi Crafts- Sawantwadi, a small town in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, is well-known for its Sawantwadi crafts.

Lacquer ware is a popular medium among these artists. These include traditional lacquered furniture painted by hand and light fixtures. Bidri Work- Bidri ware is a traditional craft that started in Aurangabad and uses zinc and copper as basic materials. Artists utilise this art form to create decorative objects. Mashru and Himru fabrics are glossy cotton and silk blends.

During festivals one can observe Maharashtrians dressed in their magnificent traditional clothes. Men typically wear dhoti with pheta, which is the Marathi word for turban. The women here wear choli and a nine-yard saree called as Nauwari Saadi or Lugda.

Women wear the famed Kohlapuri Saaj necklace, which is created in Kolhapur. They also wear the ‘Brahmani Nath’, which is embellished with Basra pearls and emeralds. Other things are constructed by combining gold beads, red and white stones, and pearls.
